Historical Timeline

Keewatin Air LP started in 1971 as a small, one aircraft operator providing cargo and charter services from Rankin Inlet, Nunavut.
This timeline showcases how Keewatin Air has grown over the past half century to become a world-class air ambulance and medevac organization.

1971

Keewatin Air LP officially took flight, marking the beginning of a bold new chapter in Northern aviation. Visionaries Robert (Bob) May and his wife Judy Saxby embraced the challenge at a time when flying across Canada’s vast North was still in its infancy. Their pioneering spirit helped lay the foundation for an industry that would soon soar.

Keewatin Air Limited (original name) proudly received its official license, marking a significant milestone in its journey to transform aviation in Canada’s North.

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut was proudly selected as the home base for Keewatin Air LP. Strategically located on the coast and equipped with a runway, Rankin Inlet offered a solid foundation with existing infrastructure, buildings, a utilidor system, and shops left over from its nickel mining past. It was the perfect launchpad for a bold aviation venture in Canada’s North.

1974

The first aircraft to join the Keewatin Air LP fleet was the Cessna 185, proudly registered as C-FBKA. This marked the beginning of a legacy in Northern aviation, with a reliable and rugged aircraft ready to take on the vast skies of Canada’s North.
