Flight Nurse / Respiratory Therapist / Advanced Care Paramedic Roles

Air Medical Crew

The KAL Air Medical Program's core team, known as the Air Medical Crew, consists of Critical Care Flight Nurses, Advanced Care Paramedics, and Respiratory Therapists. They operate across all three NU regions and in MB through the Trauma Flight HEMS program.

Comprehensive Training

Our 12-day training program prepares participants for work in remote areas like Nunavut. It covers cultural orientation, company policies and procedures, emergency care (adult, pediatric, neonatal, obstetrical), aviation safety, and arctic survival skills.

Professional registration in Manitoba is required:

  • Nurses: College of Registered Nurses MB (CRNM) and College and Association of Nurses of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CANNN)
  • Advanced Care Paramedics: College of Paramedics MB (CPMB)
  • Respiratory Therapists: MB Association of Registered Respiratory Therapists (MARRT)

Besides having experience in critical care, ICU, emergency, or pre-hospital care, AMC members must demonstrate competency for this role by holding certifications in the relevant areas.

Examples include:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • Trauma certification (PHTLS/ITLS/TNCC)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) *considered an asset/provided in new hire training*
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Acute Care of the At-Risk Newborn (ACoRN) *considered an asset/provided in new hire training*
  • CAMATA Air Medical Training Program *considered an asset/provided in new hire training*

Training, both initial and recurrent, ensures proficiency in advanced procedures beyond typical hospital nursing, paramedicine, or respiratory therapy. This includes airway management, defibrillation, cardioversion, external pacing, chest needle decompression, thoracentesis catheter insertion, intraosseous infusion, and emergency umbilical venous catheterization.
